Vanuatu is an island of adventure and an enthusiast's paradise. This geologically active archipelago offers colorful reefs, lush jungle, and volcanic clatter. Visitors can drive up to Yasura Crater, the most accessible active volcano in the world, sea kayak along the islands' shoreline, explore underwater relics from World War II or cycle through coconut plantations and rainforests. <\/p>\n

Tourism is concentrated on the islands of Efate, Tanna, and Espiritu Santo. Foreign visitors arrive in Port Vila, on Efate, and from there travel by boat or plane to explore the rest of the country. <\/p>\n

The island group of Vanuatu was inhabited as early as 500 B.C. Before and after the 13th century A.D. it was in the heart of the Tonga Empire. In the 19th century, the islands that make up Vanuatu (then called the New Hebrides) were settled by British and French missionaries, planters, and traders. Great Britain and France eventually negotiated a condominium over the two islands. <\/p>\n

After World War II, a power struggle ensued between the native islanders and representatives of countries with dual colonial interests over the future political and economic course of the islands. The constitutional situation was settled in 1977, at a conference between the British, the French, and the new representatives of the islands in Paris. The Vanuatu Islands became fully independent in 1980. <\/p>\n

The islands of Vanuatu consist of a double chain of islands stretching 900 kilometers from north to southeast. They are located about 2,250 km from Australia's Sydney, and 800 km from Fiji. Vanuatu consists of about 40 mountainous islands and 40 islets and rocks. These islands are of volcanic origin and there are five active volcanoes. <\/p>\n
