It borders Austria, Belgium, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, France, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p> Germany's northern lands are washed by the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. They are connected to each other by the Kiel Canal, which is a busy transport route. The North Sea is relatively low-lying and flat, flooded at high tides and forming a muddy zone. The shores of the Baltic Sea are also quite low-lying. Farther out to sea, the coastal lowlands turn into a flat and wide plain that stretches across the whole of North Germany.<\/p>\n<p> In the central part of Germany there are forested mountains with narrow gorges and stony plateaus. In the far west of the country there are long ranges of hills. Forests occupy comparatively small area, about 25% of the whole country. Broad-leaved trees dominate there: oak, hornbeam, beech, alder, linden, ash, maple.
