There are two reasons why so much is known about ancient Egypt: the dry and decay-inhibiting Egyptian climate and the elaborate burial practices of the pharaohs. You may have heard of Tutankhamun and Ramses II, but they were certainly not the only pharaohs from the so-called New Kingdom. Although they all had something in common: they were buried in the Valley of the Kings.

Some of the frescoes are so distinct that it is almost impossible to believe that they are so ancient because of such vivid colors. It is worth inviting a local guide or at least reading a little about ancient Egyptian burial practices beforehand. The texts and images on the walls are quite complex, and your visit will be much more interesting if you get a general idea of what is going on in all the scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Abu Simbel Rock Temples<\/span><\/h2>\n

Abu Simbel is one of the most inaccessible historical sites in Egypt. Ramses II built this place as a visual symbol of his power over the Nubians, and even more than 3,000 years later the view of Abu Simbel is breathtaking.<\/span><\/p>\n

The large temple was erected to pay homage to Pharaoh Ramses II himself. Next to it is the smaller and less famous temple of Nefertari, the pharaoh's first wife. Both temples are rather plain inside. Simple frescoes and reliefs tell of the valor of Ramses. However, the rows of statues inside are quite impressive.<\/span><\/p>\n
