Les Hollandais se sont alors rendu compte qu'ils ne pouvaient pas forcer les Indiens locaux \u00e0 travailler dans les mines et les plantations. Ils ont donc commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 importer des esclaves noirs des pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest.<\/p>\n<p>C'est pourquoi dans les rues de Paramaribo, la capitale, les mosqu\u00e9es musulmanes coexistent tranquillement avec les temples hindous et les \u00e9glises protestantes. C'est ici, au Suriname, qu'a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite la premi\u00e8re synagogue de l'h\u00e9misph\u00e8re occidental.
