Kimberly - the city of diamonds

In South Africa there is a city where tourists from all over the world come to feel the spirit of the "diamond rush. The first pieces of valuable rock were first found here in the nineteenth century. A lucky child named Erasmus Jacobson was the first to find a huge diamond and thus went down in history.

Among the "diamond" attractions, the so-called "Big Hole" is popular among tourists. This is a crater dug by hand (!), a man-made hole of enormous dimensions - more than a kilometer deep and several hundred meters in diameter. However, now it is flooded with water.

Tourists often visit the Mining Museum as well. This is a kind of "mini Kimberley" of the last century, which reproduces the environment of the "diamond era" in the smallest detail. This open-air museum has streets, cabanas, banks, mines, and even a city streetcar. Other popular museums in the city are the Museum of Transportation and the Museum of Fine Arts. And the Memorial to Miners and Diamond Miners (a fountain with several male figures) is set in memory of the workers who died in the mines.

Getting to Kimberley is not difficult. The city has an airport that receives domestic flights and a train station. It is the junction of two major highways. For travelers looking for unconventional itineraries or interested in world history, Kimberley is on the list of the most interesting places in the world.
