Suriname: a real exotic, a paradise on Earth

В зазывных объявлениях туристических фирм Суринам часто называют «последним райским уголком на земле». На государственном гербе этой маленькой страны красуется следующее: пара индейцев в набедренных повязках стоят в полном обмундировании – с луком и стрелами. Однако по прошествии 5 веков с момента европейской колонизации, только трое из ста жителей Суринама назовут себя аборигенами «земли, воды и лесов».

Surinam was conquered with astonishing cruelty. And then the Dutch realized that local Indians could not be forced to work in the harsh mines and plantations. So they began importing black slaves from West Africa.

This is why in the streets of Paramaribo, the capital of the state, Muslim mosques quietly coexist with Hindu temples and Protestant churches. It was here in Suriname that the first synagogue in the Western Hemisphere was built. It was built by Jews who had fled across the ocean from national persecution in Portugal and Spain.

It is worth recognizing that this diversity of temples and beliefs creates a unique architectural appearance of the capital, it is an additional touch of exoticism in Suriname.

The neat, pretty, two-story houses, built in the Dutch style, give the city a resemblance to an ordinary provincial village in the Netherlands.

It is noteworthy that every second local resident lives in the capital. This distribution of the population is not unusual for most developing countries, which are relatively new to independence.

Значительная часть Суринама сплошь покрыта непроходимыми джунглями, которые и сегодня практически не освоены. Поэтому фраза о «последнем райском уголке земли» имеет под собой фактическую основу. Суринам – это тысячи квадратных километров абсолютно дикой сельвы, покой и тишина которой нарушается лишь пением птиц, громкими криками обезьян, да величественным шумом водопадов и рек где-то в глубине.
