Journey from Da Nang to Hue

Journey from Da Nang to Hue
With its sandy beaches and easy access to some of Vietnam's most impressive UNESCO World Heritage sites, Da Nang City is always of interest to tourists. A vibrant transportation hub and port city, Da Nang is a good starting point for trips around the country.

One of the best options is a trip to Hue, with its large 19th-century citadel that houses the Forbidden Purple City. Hue is quite close to Da Nang and can be reached in a day. But, if you want to get up close to Hue and its cultural heritage, plan to spend a little more time; you won't regret it!

The Road in Vietnam

Ways to get from Da Nang to Hue

It's only about 100 kilometers (62.5 miles), and it's a journey that will take you through scenic mountains. Being such a short distance, it is possible to take a day trip, as mentioned above, but if you have time, it is worth planning to spend several days in Hue to take your time to see all the main sights.

If you use a rental car for your vacation in Vietnam, this is probably the best way to get from Da Nang to Hue, as you have complete freedom regarding when you leave Da Nang and how long you spend on the trip. The roads can be a little intimidating as they wind through the mountains.

There will be a lot of trucks on them and so the trip will take longer than you might expect. For this reason we do not recommend renting a car just for this trip, as there are many buses and trains that you can get for a very affordable price.

From Da Nang to Hue by train

Travelling by train

Travelling from Da Nang to Hue by train has several advantages. They are affordable ticket prices, relatively short travel times, a good level of comfort, and the great scenery you will see along the way! There are also a number of trains that run daily, so you are sure to find one that fits your schedule.

The train from Da Nang to Hue is about 2.5 to 3 hours away, so it's not a particularly long trip. You may have heard that train travel in Vietnam can be a little uncomfortable, but when you are going to be in the carriage for about 3 hours, the comfort level is usually not such a problem.

There are four different seating options: hard seats, soft seats, and individual compartments. A hard seat obviously won't give you the best level of comfort, but if you're traveling on a tight budget, you can save a few more dollars by choosing a hard seat.

The padded seats increase comfort and are probably the best recommendation for this route.

But you can pay a little more and choose a coupe that has either 4 (soft) or 6 (hard) beds. This may give you a little more space, but, all things considered, will not be more comfortable than a standard upholstered seat.

There are high-speed trains, but you will miss some beautiful scenery, plus these trains have inconvenient arrival times in Hue. So, for example, we don't recommend the night train from Da Nang to Hue.

Whichever option you choose for your train ride, you can take advantage of services such as restrooms, snacks, steward service, air conditioning, and space to walk and lie down if needed.

Bus from Da Nang to Hue

Bus to Da Nang

The main advantage of traveling by bus from Da Nang to Hue is that it will save you even more money! Buses are a few dollars cheaper than trains, so they're a great option if you're really trying to save money and get around Vietnam on a tight budget.

Aside from the cost, however, the bus doesn't really have any advantages over the train, unless such a trip is more in line with your schedule.

The bus trip takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes, so they are usually a little slower than most trains, and your exact time of arrival in Hue will depend largely on the density of traffic on the road. The journey through the mountains is scenic, but the roads are winding and can be narrow, so the driver is unlikely to get much speed if the road is busy.

But for a little money you get a comfortable seat if you choose Hoang Long or SinhTourist. They both provide VIP buses with toilets, TVs, stewards and snacks on board, and with sleeper beds, so you get a lot more leg room. This means that these buses can be really quite comfortable. Plus, there are a lot of flights every day.
