Sights of Plyos in the Ivanovo region: photos and descriptions, what to see in the city

The sights of Plyos

Do not think that only in large cities there are interesting places. Of course, there are plenty of options for where to go in Samara, but tourists are also attracted by the attractions of small Ivanov. Few people know that seventy kilometers away there is a town with only two thousand people - Plyos, the birthplace of I.I. Levitan and a real oasis of tranquility.

Mount Levitan and the wooden Church of the Resurrection

This wooden church was painted by Levitan in 1894. The small beautiful building juts into the sky with its pointed roof and stands on a mountain named after the artist, in the middle of an ancient, overgrown cemetery.

In fact, the painting immortalizes another church, which was located on the same site. Unfortunately, the church burned to the ground in 1903. Only when they opened the Levitan house-museum, they decided to restore the church as well. The construction began in 1982. Not only this monument of wooden architecture is impressive, but also the mountain itself. It offers a beautiful view of the banks of the Volga, and you do not want to leave this island of tranquility.

Any city has its own center, the point from which its construction began. For Plyos, that place was Sobornaya Mountain. Now here you can see historical monuments of all eras. Like most of the ancient Russian cities, Plyos was originally a fortress, which just built on Sobornaya Mountain. Over time the town grew, new buildings were erected. Settlement tried to rebuild and redevelop, but all attempts have come to nothing. We can say that thanks to this, it was possible to preserve many historical sites.

Now Sobornaya Mountain is considered one of the main attractions of Plyos. City festivals and festivals, concerts and flash mobs are held here. People come here to relax from the hustle and bustle, enjoy the beautiful views that literally take your breath away. From here you can perfectly see the whole historical part of Plyos, the vastness of the Volga and the ships sailing on it, greenery and bright colors... But first we need to get acquainted with the archaeologist's work - look in the corner under the shelter, next to which there is a fire. Stone Resurrection Church

Unlike the wooden church of the same name, this church stands in the city (on the old Market Square) and is considered the most important building here: it is already visible at the entrance. Earlier on this place there were two wooden churches, but after the Patriotic War of 1812 the city authorities decided to build one stone church. Its construction was completed in 1817.

Stone Resurrection Church

The church combines two styles at once. Firstly, it is Yaroslavl architecture of the XVII century, and secondly - early classicism of the XIX century. The two-tiered tchetverik, it holds a four-slope roof. There are five heads on faceted pedestals. The central dome is illuminated. There is a refectory and the side facades are decorated with Tuscan columns. Next to the church stands a beautiful bell tower with figurative decorations.

In 1962, an art gallery was housed in the church building. In Soviet times the church was not restored, which caused the facade to suffer somewhat. Now the domes and bell towers shine in the sun and shimmer beautifully at night - you can see the building from almost anywhere in the city.

Opposite the church is a wooden chapel. Together with the church they form a single ensemble. The chapel itself was brought from the village in the 80s of the last century, at the same time its restoration began. Interestingly, the church is depicted on most postcards and souvenirs with a panorama of Plyos. Also the church was filmed for several films of the Soviet era.

Assumption Cathedral

This church is considered one of the oldest in Plyos. It is located on Sobornaya Mountain; previously there was a wooden church, built in the XV century. Unfortunately, it burned down in 1695, and in 1699 it was replaced by a stone cathedral.

Assumption Cathedral in Plyos

Historians and architects say that the present cathedral was built according to the exact design of the old wooden one. Its architecture is quite simple: Moscow Baroque with one chapter and a hipped bell tower. It has its own refectory, and the octagon is surrounded by cornices and semi-columns. The windows are decorated with keeled platbands.

The church used to be perfectly visible from almost anywhere in Plyos, but now tall birches have grown here, blocking the view. In 1828, a summer church was built next to the cathedral. Unfortunately, today all that is left of it is a bowed cross. However, every year there is a procession from the church to the place where the annex used to stand.

  • Where is it located: Sobornaya Gora Street.
  • Opening hours: daily from 9:00 to 17:00.

St. Barbara's Church

Another beautiful church in Plyos; for many years it has graced the city with its white-stone walls. Modest provincial church in the style of classicism was built in the XVIII-XIX centuries - the exact date is unknown, and the bell tower was completed in 1821. It is likely that the church itself - much earlier.

St. Barbara's Church

Levitan often depicted this temple on his canvases. Perhaps the reason is that from here you can see the beautiful expanses of the Volga River, which will leave few people indifferent. The modest and even ascetic church contrasts with the richly decorated bell tower, graceful arches and columns. The interior of the temple is no less interesting. On the walls are glue paintings on the themes of the New Testament. They narrate the life of Christ and are decorated with ornamental frames.

  • Where is it located: Varvarinskaya Street, 19 A.
  • Opening hours: daily from 9:00 to 17:00.

Monument to Isaak Levitan

Of course, Plyos did not do without the Levitan monument. After all, so many places here are associated with his name! The monument to the famous artist was erected in 1974 next to his museum. Not only the local authorities, but also concerned citizens played a big role in this.

Monument to Isaak Levitan

The sculptural Levitan looks at the Volga, which he so often depicted in his paintings. In one hand he holds a palette of paints, and the other he clutches to his heart. The monument is made of black stone and stands on a granite pedestal. For the 600th anniversary of the city, the monument was restored and the pedestal replaced with a stronger one.

  • Where is it located: Sovetskaya Street.
  • Cost of attendance: free of charge.

To summarize

Small towns or even villages are often not appreciated on their own merits. For example, the beautiful Pushkin Mountains are practically an island of tranquility compared to the bustling metropolises, and the sights worth seeing in Ulyanovsk will help you truly relax and unwind.

Plyos is a very small town, but many tourists come here to walk through the parks, look at the spectacular scenery of the Volga and visit interesting museums. There you can touch the past, learn about the interesting traditions of bygone centuries and even become a participant in an ancient wedding. Is it possible to imagine such a thing in big cities?
