Northern Thailand is one part of the cradle of Thai civilization of the Golden Triangle. It was here that the independent ancient Thai states emerged.

Within the 4 provinces lies a National Park called Khao Yai, where you can find many interesting animals and plants. Loei province also has a National Park, it is called Phu Kra Dung. In the place of Phimai there is a monument of classical Khmer architecture stone temple-temple.

There are not too many historical sites in the eastern district, but there is also something to see for the curious tourist.
