Surat Thani Airport Surat Thani: Flight information

Surat Thani Airport Surat Thani: Flight information

Surat Thani Airport is an important transportation hub in southern Thailand. It is more oriented to serve the tourist flow to Samui and other islands of the Gulf of Thailand. To a lesser extent, for those traveling to the Andaman coast.

Although the airport in Surat Thani looks modest on the outside, it is internationally rated. It is equipped with one runway with a length of 3 km. Passenger terminal - also one, focused on joint service of local and international flights. Passenger traffic is small - about 300 thousand people a year.

In addition to serving civilian vessels, the airport serves as a military base for the Royal Air Force. This is a common practice in Thailand.

Destinations served

90% flights connect Surat Thani with Bangkok. This is a budget way for tourists who want to save money on travel. For example, to get from the capital to Ko Samui by direct flight, you need to spend more than $100 per person. The same destination, but via Surat Thani, will cost 3-4 times cheaper. The flight is $20 + about $10 for the bus to Dongsak and the ferry to Samui (minimum prices given). The only disadvantage of the budget route is the travel time, which instead of 1 hour and a little will take about 5 hours.

Cheap airfare from Bangkok is explained by the fact that low-cost airlines fly to Surat Thani:

  • Thai Lion Air
  • Air Asia
  • Nok Air

More than a dozen flights land daily from Bangkok. The same number of return flights leave. Most land in Don Muang. See also: airports in Thailand.

There is one direct flight a day to/from Chiang Mai (Air Asia). It is convenient and fast: you can get there in 1 hr. 50 minutes, paying about $80 for a ticket. International destinations are represented by Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur and several Chinese cities.

How to get to/from the airport

The airport is located west of the city of Surat Thani, 21 km from its center. Since the air gateway of the province is of key importance in the transport system of southern Thailand, buses to one side or the other depart frequently. There are two main destinations:

  • Dongsak piers - and on to the islands (Samui, Phangan, Tao);
  • Andaman coast (Krabi province, Phuket and other islands).

In the lobby of the airport are the ticket offices of Phantip Travel, Seatran, Lomprayah, Raja and others. Tickets for the bus to Donsak and the ferry or boat to the islands are purchased in one window.

The fares are about the same. Lomprayah takes tourists in small boats. Seatran and Raja have high-capacity ferries: in addition to people they also carry cars ($12.5 per car space).

There are also car rental companies: Budget, Hertz, Sixt, Thai Rent. You should book a car in advance, especially in high season, otherwise you won't be able to get a good deal.

The cost of the road should also include the transfer from the pier to the destination. Despite the small size of the islands, its cost can reach $5-6.

The Surat Thani to Phuket (or Krabi) route is less popular. But buses in this direction also periodically depart from the airport. You can get there in about 4 hours by paying $5-$8 for a ticket.

Tickets for the return trip can be purchased from the ticket offices located at the piers, Phuket Town or Krabi Town Bus Station, or from any tour operator. Departure frequency and cost are similar to those discussed above.
