Trinity Cathedral in Pskov

At the confluence of the two rivers Velikaya and Pskova on the cape stretches the ancient city of Pskov. Archaeologists confirm that the first settlements were built in the middle of the first millennium B.C. Excavations indicate that here in the X-XII centuries there was a well fortified earthen city. In this city tourists have a lot to see, so it is worth visiting Pskov, which is especially famous for its churches.

Pskov in ancient times

The Krom, or Kremlin in other words, was the most important place of the old city. It was the center of trade and life. Veche Square is the center of the city, where residents gathered for meetings and took important decisions. In 1397 one of such assemblies approved the Pskov Judicial Charter - a collection of laws of the republic.

In the southern part of the fortification of Pskov (Persnyakh) there was a Veche belfry. Here was also located the chamber of boyars' meeting and archive of Veche republic. In 1510 people of Pskov heard the last beating of the veche bell. Pskov Veche Republic was incorporated into Moscow Russia.

At the command of Princess Olga in the middle of the tenth century, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity was erected in Pskov. In the XII century, the second stone cathedral was built by order of Prince Vsevolod-Gavriel of Pskov. But the most striking is the Trinity Cathedral, which was erected in 1367. Its role was crucial in establishing the local traditions of architecture. Later the cathedral was reconstructed.

In our time, Trinity Cathedral is the fourth in a row. It was built in 1699. Here stands out an intricate iconostasis in seven tiers. In the frame behind the walls of the temple there are relics of Pskov saints.

The bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral deserves special attention. Its construction dates back to the XVII-XIX centuries. At that time, the construction of walls was not the same as the construction of houses. And the bell tower was built on the site of the ancient tower "on Radchina Voskhod". These unique structures can be seen in the Pskov Kremlin.
