The history of this archipelago has deep ancient roots. Around the large island, which gave its name to the archipelago, are more than 50 islets of different sizes. Lake Ladoga reliably hides its pearl, Valaam.

From the pier of the Nikonov Bay steep paths lead up to the tourist center, which is located on the territory of the Resurrection Skete. Behind its fence, a whole town is lined up, and it is from here that excursions and hikes on the Valaam Islands begin.

The exact date of the construction of the monastery on Valaam Island is unknown. Its history is connected with the struggle of Sweden and Russia for Karelia.

Since 1715, the monastery, which had been destroyed many times before, began to be restored. However, the wooden buildings repeatedly burned in subsequent years. Only since 1782, began a period of revival and construction of the monastery facilities of brick according to the plan. Most of the buildings were built by 1814.

The main complex of Valaam island is the former Savior and Transfiguration Monastery. The Savior and Transfiguration Cathedral with its high bell tower serves as the dominant feature of the entire archipelago.

In the XIX century, almost all monastery buildings were rebuilt, which changed their architectural appearance. The last major work in the complex was the construction of the Transfiguration Cathedral made of stone. The old temple was demolished, and in its place in 1887 by the project of A. Silin was built a two-story cathedral.

You can wander the trails of Valaam or take a boat ride around it and take a look at the other islands that make up the archipelago.

Not the bright colors of northern nature highlight the rugged, unique beauty of the island, which has captivated many generations of art people.
