Internet in Thailand - WIFI, 3G, 4G. Cost and connection

It's hard for modern man to do without the Internet, and even when vacationing in far away Thailand, we are looking for an opportunity to get online to connect with relatives and friends back home, or to make a Skype call.

Those who are planning a trip to this distant, sunny country in the near future, probably would not hurt to know how the Internet works in Thailand, as well as all the nuances of its use. Well, we'll try to help you with that.

Operators

Mobile Internet services in Thailand are provided by AIS, DTAC and True Move. DTAC, which has the largest network of base stations with 3G and 4G support, is consistently the best in quality. This operator, the only one of all, provides a loan of 30 baht when you need to call with a zero balance.

The second position is occupied by AIS, which also has a good level of connectivity and 3G signal quality. The level of coverage in the country by these two operators is about equal, so their services are in high demand among those who need primarily mobile Internet. As for True Move, this operator is active in the northern regions of Thailand, introducing modern 4G communication. DTAC's 850 MHz 4G Internet is available in Bangkok and in more than 40 provinces of Thailand.

How much does the Internet cost in Thailand

Internet users are offered a variety of unlimited Internet packages to choose from. Although the concept of unlimited Internet in Thailand is rather relative. It is common practice here to provide only a certain amount of unlimited traffic.

Having used up the amount of unlimited traffic, the speed of communication drops significantly.

The most popular, due to their price and convenience, are packages costing: 49, 199, 299, 399, 699 and 799 baht; traffic with unlimited speed. In all tariffs the maximum speed of the Internet reach 42 Mbit / s, but at the same time tariffs for 299 and 399 baht are the least favorable, because after exceeding the traffic they drop the speed to 128 Kbps, and that's very little, you must admit. In the other tariffs, the speed of the Internet, after using up the provided high-speed traffic, is 384 kbps.

  • Let's take a closer look at the DTAC example
Package cost 49 baht / day 199 baht/week 299 baht / month 399 baht / month 699 baht / month 799 baht / month

Frequency and speed of mobile Internet

DTAC Operator: GSM 1800, 3G 850/2100 MHz, 4G LTE 2100 MHz;

AIS Operator: GSM 1800, 3G 900/2100 MHz;

TrueMove operator: GSM 1800, 3G 850/2100 MHz, 4G LTE 2100 MHz.

Until recently, travelers who had the DTAC's largest operator card in their smartphones had trouble using mobile Internet because of the incompatibility of modern gadgets with 850 MHz frequencies, but with the 2100 MHz connection, supported by all recent generations of devices, this problem can be completely forgotten. It's easy to find out if your mobile device is compatible with local frequencies; To do this, you just need to check the enclosed instructions or go to the manufacturer's website. Usually it clearly states the frequency range in which the particular gadget works.

It is important not to be confused: support for GSM (2G) 850 MHz is not equal to support for 3G and 4G, or HSPA, it is a low data download speed, which you hardly need.
