Wat Ratchanuddha Temple - Features and Attractions

Wat Ratchanadda Temple is one of the amazing cultural monuments of Bangkok. It is located in the Old City, not far from the Golden Mountain. This is the real Buddhist treasure of the capital of Thailand.

The prototype of the temple of Wat Ratchanadda was the Ceylon temple, which was lost in the third century BC. The construction of Wat Ratchanadda began in 1876 at the initiative of King Rama 3. It is interesting that the design of the temple embodied the hallmarks of King Rama 3: masculinity and severity.

The name of the temple is translated as "Royal niece". From the name it becomes clear that the king gave this building to his niece. The construction of the temple was completed in 1902.

Attractions

The temple consists of several buildings. One of them is Loha Parsat. The locals have long called this building the iron palace. This is the only temple building in Thailand built of metal. It consists of 4 floors and reaches a height of 36 meters Loha Parsat, crowned with 37 spiers, which symbolizes the number of virtues that stand on a long path to enlightenment.

 

The Loha Parsat complex includes five towers, which are connected by a single labyrinth corridor. They also have rooms for meditation and unique Buddhist sculptures. The Buddha statue made of cast copper deserves special attention. All this you can see with your own eyes. Spend as much time here as possible to plunge into the mysterious world of Wat Ratchanadda.

The temple grounds also include a unique amulet market, which is the most famous in Thailand. In the market you can buy amulets that will not only remind you of a pleasant stay, but also bring good luck. Near the Wat Ratchanadda complex lies a beautiful square.

How to get there

You can get to Wat Ratchanadda by tuk-tuk or taxi. It won't cost you a fortune. The temple is located in an area called Phra Nakhon, which is located on the territory of old Bangkok.

You can walk to Wat Ratchanadda on foot. It will take quite a bit of time if you are in the Victory Monument area. Moreover, the contemplation of picturesque landscapes will give you many pleasant minutes.

The ideal location for a walk is the center of Bangkok, the Khaosan Road area.

Another option is to get to the temple by boat for only 12 baht. The boat stop is located next to the Pratunam mall. You need to take a boat that goes along the Gold Line route and you will get straight to Wat Ratchanadda.

You can also get on buses No. 159, 5, 8, 37, 56, 27. The price of the trip will cost you only 6 baht (or a little higher, depending on the distance). Buses No. 159, 56 and 5 stop at the Wat Rat Natda Ram stop, which serves as the final destination to visit Wat Ratchanadda.

Cost and visiting hours

Wat Ratchanadda is open every day from 7:30 am to 5 pm. You do not need to pay for the entrance, but, keeping up the tradition, you need to put 20 baht into the piggy bank next to the entrance.

It is advisable to spend at least three hours visiting the temple to get to know every corner of this amazing gift from King Rama 3 to Thailand.

It is interesting

  • Despite the uniqueness of the temple, there are not so many tourists here. Tourist excursions do not go here. Therefore, here you can truly relax from the hustle and bustle.
  • Traditionally, Thai palaces are made in red and gold. Wat Ratchanadda is different in that the architectural ensemble combines only black and white.
