Belokurikha: a resort rich in health springs

There are mineral water springs in the south of the Smolensk region of Altai Krai. And they are located in an underground fault on an elevation of 250 hundred meters, near the junction point of the West Siberian Plain and the Altai-Sayan mountain system. The deposit was discovered in the 19th century by two local residents, Kazantsev and Gudkov. Gulyaev studied the deposit in particular thoroughly, the first patients began to come to the deposit in 1867. From that time Belokurikha began to develop as a resort, the first reflections can be found in old photographs of Belokurikha of those years.

Radon springs occupy one square kilometer, in a cross-section this area resembles a layered pie with mineral water between the layers. Water circulates through aquifers and labyrinthine horizons, being heated by the sun, and in the process of moving it is saturated with trace elements and radon. To the surface, the water emerges along an inclined plane in the form of springs.

Belokurikha hot springs contain radon-saturated and nitrogen-siliceous waters, to put it simply, they are nitrogen thermae. Water comes from a great depth, which is more than 400 meters. Water in these springs has a temperature of more than 40 degrees, and its healing properties are obtained by a large number of trace elements and chemicals. In particular, radon, which is contained in the mineral water, pain relieves, cures allergies, removes inflammation, reduces the concentration of cholesterol in the body, and has a rejuvenating effect.

The symbol of Belokurikha is the spring "Snake Well". Few vacationers are left without a "spa photo" of this place. This spring looks like a small chapel, it is equipped in the place where the first baths of the resort used to be, since that time more than 150 years have passed. The name of the spring comes from the fact that there are a large number of snakes living nearby and that the warm wells of the spring are full of them. The natural temperature of the spring is 28 degrees and the level of radioactivity of water is within 20 Mahe. Such indicators are conditioned by presence of radium, potassium and rubidium in water, decay of these elements takes place with evolution of heat and radioactive substances and valuable radon. The spring is located one and a half kilometers south of the city center.
