Koh Kood, the coconut lagoon of Thailand, is located in the Gulf of Thailand, near the borders of Cambodia. Administratively belongs to the province of Trat, 79 km from the city of Trat, southeast of the island of Ko Chang.

The total area is an area of 131 km². The island is the fourth largest in Thailand, the second largest island in the Chang Archipelago and part of the Mu Ko Chang Marine National Park.

The landscape is dominated by hilly terrain, the highest point - 315 meters. The number of local residents does not exceed 2,000 people. They are descendants of Cambodians who fled to Thailand from the French colonists. They settled on the uninhabited island in 1905. Their main occupations: tourist services, fishing, rubber and coconut harvesting.

How to get to the island

Note that there is no airport on the island. Therefore, you can get to the island by ferry or speedboat from the piers of the city of Trat, and the neighboring island of Ko Chang.

From Bangkok. By air from Bangkok to Trat Airport - located 30 kilometers from Laem Ngob Pier and Dan Khao Pier, about 60 kilometers from Laem Sork Pier. Bangkok Airways has 3 daily flights, 55 minutes flight time. Approximate ticket price is 2550 baht.

Take a bus to the bus station in Trat. Travel time is five hours. Bus routes depart from the eastern Ekamai Bus Terminal every hour from 6:00 to 24:00. From the northern terminal "New Morchit", less frequently, at 08:30, 09:30, 12:30, 15:30, 17:30 and 23:00. The average ticket price is 250-300 baht. If finances allow, you can take a cab, the approximate cost of 4000 baht.

From Pattaya. Get to the pier in Trat province by minivan, and from there go to Koh Kood. The approximate cost is 500 baht. Or use the services of 35 Group Pattaya. Note that the ferries to Koh Kood depart in the morning. You should arrive at the pier before 10:00 am.

From the neighboring island of Koh Chang ferries go to Koh Kood from Bang Bao Pier, speedboats from Kai Bay Beach and Bang Bao Pier. The boats are good in that they take passengers to the beaches, pre-specifying the drop-off at Koh Kood.

Transportation

When you get off the ferry at Ao Yai or Ao Salad piers, you can only see the occasional local tuk-tuk. You have to get to the beaches on your own.

There is no public or commercial transportation on Ko Kuda. Local residents do not provide transportation services either.

The main means of transportation on the island is the traditional motorcycles of Thailand. You can rent a vehicle at any hotel. There are no specialized rental services. You will also be offered bicycles and cars, but the mountainous terrain makes them difficult to use, it is better to use a bike.

Renting a bike on Koh Kood costs about 250-400 baht, which is much more expensive than on Koh Chang. The island has several large gas stations located north of Khlong Chao. Do not be surprised when you see gas stations on the road - gasoline in bottles, this is the kind of business in Thailand.

Where to Settle

The tourist history of Koh Kood is only a few years old. Therefore, the infrastructure on the island is in the process of formation.

 

Most of the hotels are located along the shoreline, right on the beach, representing accommodation such as bungalows. Their photos are presented in most tourist brochures in Thailand. They can be as traditional houses on stilts, thatched buildings, and wooden bungalows with a thatched roof. Night stay on the beach in a bungalow with air conditioning from 400-700 baht.

And only on Klong Chao built several resorts, hotels with an average of 8-10 rooms. Some of them are shown in the photo below.

For those who like comfort, there is a wide range of hotels. They are located in cozy corners of the island. These are individual villas or bungalows with open terraces and balconies. They are all equipped with air conditioning. There are Internet, cable TV, mini-bar, safe. The bathrooms have all the necessary cosmetic and toiletries. The complex has a swimming pool, spa, bars and restaurants.

As a budget option, you can consider a dorm room. You should look for them in Klong Chao. They are located near the river, but the sea is only a 5-minute walk away. However, note that the toilet and shower you will have on the street. It costs 200-250 baht per day. If you prefer to have the amenities in the room, a little more expensive to rent a separate wooden house with a TV and a refrigerator. Although for the same price you can find accommodation on the coast.

 

The number of tourists on Koh Kood is much less than in other resorts of Thailand. But hotels in high season should be booked in advance to have a choice. Also note that in low season, some hotels are closed. Since their use is not rational.

Climate

On Koh Kood, tropical humidity prevails. Sea water temperature does not depend on the seasons and is +27 ... +29 degrees year-round. The rainy season is from late May to October. The temperature during this period is +30 degrees. The ideal time to visit the island is November - March. The air temperature is 28 ... 30 degrees. From April to May the air warms up to +34 ... +36 degrees.

Beaches

The west coast of the island has the widest beaches, while the east coast is characterized by rocky coves. Many of them are uninhabited, and you have the opportunity to become their discoverers.

The most popular beaches:

Klong Chao is 600m long. The size of the beach makes it possible to organize competitions in soccer and volleyball. The beach has the most developed infrastructure. Some parts of it are lit at night. Here are both expensive hotels and rooms in gesthouses.

Bang Bao is another popular beach in the west of the island, surrounded by hills. The sea here is always calm, and the white sand is picturesque with stone boulders.

Taphao Beach is the largest beach on the island. The palm trees that grow right on the white sand make it exotic. In their shade you can take shelter from the heat. The island's beach, located near the seaport, is ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

 

Klong Yai Ki is located north of Taphao. And just a few meters from the seashore is the waterfall of the same name. Other beaches include Ao Chak, Klong Ta Tin and Yai Ki, Ai Noi, Klongkwen, Ta-U. Each of them has its own hotels and resorts.

Attractions

The main attractions are coral reefs, numerous beaches, the National Park Nam Tok area of 500 square meters, fishing villages and beautiful waterfalls.

Khlonq Chao Falls and Khlonq Yaiki Falls are worth a visit, even just looking at the photos is breathtaking. Khlonq Chao is located in the jungle, it is the largest waterfall on the island. Thais associate it with the name of King Rama VI, who stopped here during his travels.

 

The second waterfall, Klong Yai Ki, is near the beach of the same name. There is also a freshwater pool at its foot. It can be reached on foot or by kayak.

 

In the village of Ao Salad you will be offered a mini-tour to the statue of the big Buddha. It is worth visiting the coconut and rubber plantations. Attracts attention and the village on stilts Ao Yai. Most of it stands on the water. It is a Thai fishing village where you can watch the life of fishermen. Many locals can offer overnight accommodation in their hut - for only 300 baht. For lovers of ancient Buddhist temples, you can go to the Buddhist temple Klong Mat.

Until recently, the tourist brochures of the neighboring island of Ko Chang designated the entire island of Ko Kud as a tourist attraction. To this day, Ko Chang Island is the organizing site, two or three day excursions to Ko Kud.

The main types of entertainment on the island: snorkeling, kayaking, fishing, diving, beach recreation. For lovers of active recreation: jet skis and water bikes, boating, etc.

There are many small shops on the island, which offer a wide range of souvenirs. The markets sell a variety of exotic fruits, fresh fish and other seafood, a huge selection of spices and spices, as well as a variety of dried fruits. To date, the cultural program of the island is not extensive. It is just beginning to turn into a tourist center.
