Resort attractions of Sevastopol

Very often, a person choosing a place to rest in the Crimea, among other resort towns of the famous peninsula, ignores Sevastopol. The reason: the well-established household prejudices about the connection of Sevastopol exclusively with the navy, rarely with Chersonese.

However, this is not entirely true, or not at all. Few people know that Sevastopol is simply a treasure trove of beautiful places and historical sights, namely the famous Inkerman Monastery, the picturesque bay of Balaclava, and Cape Fiolent, which is glorified in legends.

Cape Fiolent owes its origin to a volcano that operated here 150 million years ago.

The Greek name of Cape Fiolent is "Parthenium", which means "Cape of the Virgin". It got its name from the ancient Greek myth of Iphigenia, who was transferred to this region by the goddess Artemis. Mentioning of the cape is found in the works of famous poets and writers: Aeschylus, Goethe, Lesya Ukrainka and others. Later the cape was given a different name - Cape of Saint George. According to legend, St. George saved the Greek sailors who were shipwrecked. At a small distance from the cape was built St. George Monastery. Turks called the famous cape in two ways: Manastyr-Burun and Felenk-Burun. The origin of the present name - Cape Fiolent is unknown. On maps it first appeared in 1807. There are several versions of the origin of the name Cape Fiolent.
