Niah National Park - a unique attraction in Malaysia

Niah National Park

Niah National Park is located in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on the sea island of Kalimantan (Borneo), located in the center of the Malay Archipelago in Southeast Asia and divided between three states: Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia.

Key features of Niah Park

Care for animals and plants is the national idea of the Malays. Even the state capital of Sarawak, where the park is located, is named after the most common pet - Kuching (translated from Malay as "cat city"). The island attracts travelers not only by the beauty of nature, but also by the incredible variety of outlandish, rare, poorly studied representatives of flora and fauna.

Of particular interest are the following:
- The salangana birds, the nests of which are used as one of the ingredients of the traditional delicacy soup;
- long-tailed macaques;
- Dwarf fallow deer, no larger than a cat;
- flying dragons;
- small owls - adults can easily fit in the palm of your hand;
- rhinoceros birds;
- butterflies up to 30 cm in size.

The main attraction of Niah Park is the underworld.

The caves in the Niah Park cover an area of over 3,000 hectares. They consist of one large tunnel and several smaller branches running in different directions. In the course of archaeological research numerous artifacts have been found in the caves: tools in the form of processed stones, remains of people and animals, household items made of clay and bone, confirming the placement of ancient settlements in the caves.

There is a historical museum on the territory of the national park, where the most valuable exhibits are kept. Scientists believe that the oldest finds are more than 40 thousand years old. This is evidenced by the rock paintings and graves of the deceased.

A very lucrative local business is the collection of salangane nests, which is engaged in the Puan tribe. The extraction of bat droppings from the caves is considered no less profitable, a prerogative of the Iban tribe. The dung enriches the soil with nitrogen and phosphorus, so it is an excellent fertilizer.

In addition to historical and industrial sites, tourists are offered an extensive cultural program: participation in ancient ceremonies, traditional dances, familiarization with the customs of the tribes inhabiting this wonderful region. For lovers of outdoor activities, mountain biking, safari and rafting are available.
