Chateau Lacossade (France)

Lacausade Castle is located in the heart of the vineyards of Bordeaux, in a park that is already 300 years old. The majestic outlines of the castle, built at the end of the 17th century, fit perfectly into the unusual natural environment, where you can even find bamboo planted in the 18th century. The castle has been owned by the same family for four centuries. The charm of this place is explained not only by its unusual architecture, but also by the fact that extraordinary people lived in it.

The castle was first mentioned as the hunting lodge of the Black Prince during the Hundred Years War. Then in 1590 it was rebuilt by Guillaume de Gasque, who held a prominent position in the court of Henry IV. Under his son Blaise, the de Gasque family left the castle, and the de Mausse family settled here. In 1768, the ancestor of the current owner of the castle married Marguerite de Gask, and the de Gask family returned to the castle.

Jacques de Lacaussade de Maudut opened his home to the public five years ago. And to the delight of visitors, he likes to talk about the customs of his ancestors. He is helped by Igor, a small American eagle who used to live in Mexico. Falconry appeared in France under Francis I. For this purpose, males were used, which are slightly smaller than females.

The architecture of the castle reflects its history. A story of unfulfilled ambitions. Guillaume de Gask, who served with Henry IV and was the owner of this area at the end of the 16th century, dreamed of a castle. With his death in 1598, all work came to a halt.

In the central tower there is a huge staircase, which was designed for a much larger building, because an additional tower was provided here. Guillaume de Gasque, who carried out the reconstruction in the 1590s, dreamed of a castle that would match his name and position. He died in 1598 and the castle was left unfinished, but the staircase survived. This staircase was restored in the 19th century and made an imitation of stone under the 16th century.

The former dining room retains its Louis XV and Louis XVI style woodwork. The panels of the Louis XV era are made with roundings and therefore the opposite panels are asymmetrical. There are decorative elements with a secret in the castle. For example, a fake door, designed identically to the door to the cellar, located nearby.

Living in the 19th century, Jean-Pierre Lacaussade was a true epicurean with an open character. He was very fond of organizing receptions and infected the whole family with his fun. And in the XIX century, his youngest son Jean-Jacques Jules de Lacaussade received here his cousin Auguste Lacaussade, who was accompanied by Lamartine. Auguste himself was a poet, a friend of Victor Hugo, George Sand and Baudelaire. He challenged his era by speaking out against serfdom.

Chateau Lacossade (France) The castle library is typical of the Enlightenment. Here are the first editions of many philosophers such as Voltaire, Montesquieu and Buffon. Here is an atlas of the 19th century, which depicts all parts of the world that were not yet so well known in that era, America and Oceania, which had not yet been discovered.

At the other end of the castle, Jacques de Lacaussade has preserved an amazing room dedicated to an occupation that was very popular during the time of Louis XIV. Some of the items used in dog hunting are kept here, which was practiced in the region for quite a long time, and which was systematized in the era of Louis XIV. There are several items here that deserve special attention. For example, powder flasks of the 16th-18th centuries. The earliest of them is made of horn, and the latest is made of copper. Powder flasks fell out of use with the advent of cartridges.

In order for people to learn about the castle, the owners arrange medieval holidays with knights in the park. And more recently, there was a Creole holiday dedicated to Auguste Lacaussade, an exceptional man who advocated the abolition of serfdom, while in Bordeaux it was preserved until 1848.
