The construction of the project was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus, one of Genoa's most famous natives. Five hundred years after this momentous event, the new oceanarium opened its doors to visitors. At the time, it was the second largest of all the oceanariums in the world, and today it remains the largest in Italy. The aquarium has become home to a huge number of marine animals:
- of many species of fish;
- reptiles, etc.
The aquarium occupies a huge area - it has 70 tanks filled with 6 million liters of water. It looks like a huge ship, ready to take to the sea at any moment, as the visitors say. The Oceanarium's unusual appearance is the merit of architect Renzo Piano, who designed the building.
Preparation for the first exhibitions and interior design was entrusted to Peter Chermayeff. Six years after its founding, in 1998, a real 100-meter long ship was added to the aquarium. This way the architects of the project were able to increase the exhibition area. The ship is connected to the main building by a comfortable roofed passage.
The Oceanarium of Genoa is one of the main attractions of Italy, a popular place for recreation. Once you visit it, you will get a lot of pleasant impressions and keep them in your memory for a long time.
