Italian Greece - the city of Syracuse

Everyone knows the name of this Greek city. But it is not in Greece, but in Italy on the island of Sicily. This city is called Syracuse. It was here that the great Archimedes lived and died at the hands of Roman soldiers. Syracuse was a major Greek colony on the island of Sicily and was founded by the Corinthians. In later times the city was ruled by Arabs, Byzantines, Normans and Romans. There are many monuments of Hellenic architecture preserved here, that is why the city is often called "little Greece". Many ancient monuments were found by archeologists. You can see them in the archaeological park of Neapolis, the most famous exhibit of which is the Greek theater. Today here are held festivals and concerts. Of interest are also a Roman amphitheater with an aqueduct, the remains of the sacrificial altar of the Syracuse tyrant Giron, the cave "Ear of Dionysius". Ortigia Island, which was part of ancient Syracuse, will delight tourists with the Temple of Apollo, the Cathedral and the Roman Castle of Maniace. On this island, next to the spring of Arethusa, grows papyrus and there is a museum of this rare plant. Findings from archaeological excavations are in the Paolo Orsi Museum. In the Museum of Medieval and Modern Art you can see many works by artists and sculptors of Sicily.

One of the main attractions of the city is considered to be the Cathedral Square, the ensemble of which is made in the Baroque style. It is necessary to visit the very picturesque Archimedean Square. Here is an amazingly beautiful fountain. The author of this water miracle - the Italian Giulio Moschetti. On another square - Cathedral Square, there is an original sculpture "Awakening", the work of sculptor Seward Johnson.

Syracuse is considered the birthplace of Sicilian wine. Many varieties of grapes were brought here by the ancient Greeks. There are few industrial enterprises here, and the inhabitants are mainly engaged in fishing and fish processing.

In the restaurants of the city you can taste the local cuisine and, of course, the local varieties of light and muscat wines.
