Tipping waiters in restaurants is considered good manners, but it is not obligatory, as a 10% service charge is always added to the bill.

The best time to satisfy your hunger between lunch and dinner is at the end of afternoon prayers (around 4 p.m.). This is when cafes and restaurants serve the freshest snacks.

In the Maldives, it is recommended to consume only bottled drinks, as tap water is simply desalinated seawater. Consumption is small, a standard 1.5-liter bottle will cost only 10 MVR.

Although most people in the Maldives speak good English, you may run into a language problem in some of the small cafes. Just in case, it's worth learning the names of the food and drinks listed above - so you can order them.

And lastly, what better way to get a taste than to read about culinary masterpieces? Of course - to taste them in person! Even newlyweds honeymooning in the Maldives should remember: there is no greater love than the love of food!
